Infant child care in League City: Five tips for the first month with your newborn

First time parents caring for a newborn infant can become overwhelmed and intimidated.

  1. Ask for help: Prior to leaving the hospital, consult with the nurses and specialists about nursing, burping, bathing your infant, changing a diaper and handling your child. They can provide expert advice.
  2. Handle with care: Newborns have fragile immune systems. Ensure that anyone handling an infant washes their hands. Family and friends who have colds or infections should not handle the child. When picking up your newborn, be sure to cradle the child’s head and neck.
  3. Prioritize: Your infant is your first priority. When your child goes down for a short nap, try to rest at the same time. It’s more important that you get your sleep rather than doing other chores.
  4. Share the work: Request your partner or a close family member to lend a hand, especially in your first month. Let your mom pick up groceries, your niece cook dinner and a friend do your laundry.
  5. Remember your needs: First-time parenting can be tedious. Plan time for yourself. Perhaps a trusted family member or friend would be willing to care for your infant for a few hours. Treat yourself to a massage, a nap or a good book.

Meeting other new moms can be a great source of support and advice. Why not join the Plum Moms Club and Stroller Strides Clear Lake club? They offer a great way for new moms to get out and participate in fun classes with their newborn.
