Fun on Labor Day with Preschoolers

Posted on 08-25-2017

When Labor Day rolls around, you may fire up the grill or head to the pool to celebrate the last long weekend before the return to school routine. The holiday provides a fun opportunity for you and your preschooler to kick up your heels and play before the arrival of cooler temperatures and shorter days!

The Labor Day holiday

Falling on the first Monday of September, Labor Day has long heralded the last celebration of summer before the return of school days and a more consistent schedule for families. Established around the turn of the 20th century to recognize American workers and to provide a respite from labor, Labor Day carries a rich significance in American culture and provides many opportunities for celebration.

Hit the pool

Celebrate the last of the summer heat with a water play day, even if it's only in your own backyard. Set up a water course with sprinklers and a kiddie pool, then take a run through the sprinklers and jump into the pool. Follow up with chilled watermelon for a memorable afternoon!

Play ball

Many fall sports, such as soccer and football, start soon after the Labor Day holiday. You and your preschooler can kickoff the fall sports season in a tot-sized way with a brightly-colored, inflatable ball. Practice tossing into a bucket or through a hula hoop and then celebrate, whether you make the goal or not, with ice-cold popsicles!

See the parade

Your preschooler loves to play dress up, so what better way to celebrate the hard work of people throughout your community than by donning hats and coats and holding an impromptu parade around the block. Whether dressed as a doctor, a teacher, a fireman, or a princess, your little one will have a lot of fun!
